SADD DWI Awareness
June 15th, 2009
On May 8, 2009 the Chestertown Fire Department in conjunction with the North Warren SADD chapter, the Horicon Fire Department, and the North Warren Emergency Squad did a demonstration to coincide with the North Warren Prom. The mock crash of two car loads of young adults culminated a day in the North Warren Central School which showed the students the results of destructive decisions.
One person was “arrested” by members of the Warren County Sheriff’s Office for Driving While Intoxicate while one person in his vehicle was killed and one was seriously injured. The persons in the second vehicle were seriously injured as a result of the crash.

On April 28th at approximately 4 PM the Chestertown Fire Department was dispatched to an unknown smoke condition off of Route 8 in Look Lake. Upon arrival of Assistant Chiefs Bartlett and Harvey a large working grass and brush fire was located off of the Niagara Mohawk power line. Extremely dry conditions and high winds spread the flames to an area encompassing approximately 10 acres. Mutual aid was received from the Horicon and Riverside Fire Department.
Structure Fire – March 6, 2009
June 1st, 2009
On March 6th, 2009 at about 1:30 AM the Chestertown Fire Department was dispatched to a fire on Route 8 with the possibility that there was an occupant trapped in the bedroom on the first floor. Chief Swan arrived in 3 minutes to find fire from three sides with heavy involvement on the first floor. It was determined that the occupant was out of the residence upon his arrival.
Mutual aid was provided by the Pottersville, Horicon, and Warrensburg Fire Departments while the North Warren Emergency Squad provided rehabilitation for the fire fighters along with our auxiliary.
The residence was built in the late 1800’s and was of balloon construction making the extinguishment very difficult.
All units were clear and in service by 6:30 AM.
Structure Fire at The Johnsburg Market
February 1st, 2009
On February 1, 2009 at 5:47 PM the Chestertown Fire Department was dispatched to assist the Johnsburg Fire Department at a structure fire at the Johnsburg Market 3449 State Route 8 in the hamlet of Johnsburg. Upon arrival the two story building was heavily involved in fire on the second story and the attic area. The building housed a general store and deli on the first floor and living space on the second story. Limited water sources in the area required the set up of a tanker operation several miles away. Members from Chestertown assisted with fire suppression, overhaul, and the tanker shuttle. No one was injured in the fire and the store and living space were completely destroyed. Operations by the members of the Chestertown Fire Department were led by 1st Assistant Chief Jack Crossman.
Structure Fire in Horicon
January 26th, 2009
On January 26, 2009 at 1:05 PM the Chestertown Fire Department was dispatched to assist the Horicon Fire Department at a structure fire on Church Street in the hamlet of Adirondack. Upon arrival the two story building was heavily involved in fire on the second story and the attic area. Temperatures at the time of the fire were around 8 degrees which made operations difficult. Limited water in the area required the set up of a tanker operation. Members for Chestertown assisted with fire suppression, overhaul, and the tanker shuttle. No one was injured in the fire and the house was left uninhabitable. Operations by the members of the Chestertown Fire Department were under the direction of 1st Assistant Chief Jack Crossman.
Fire on White Schoolhouse Road
November 4th, 2008On October 15, 2008 at 7:01 PM the Chestertown Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire on White Schoolhouse Road. Units were enroute to Bolton Landing for a standby and re-routed to the scene. Upon arrival of Chief Richard Swan he reported a working structure fire with heavy fire venting from the second story and requested mutual aid. Firefighters were able to make an aggressive interior attack on the fire and were able to knock the fire down in approximately 10 minutes. Fire damage was limited to the floor of origin with water and smoke damage on the first floor. The house is salvageable. Mutual aid was received from the Pottersville and Horicon Fire Departments as well as the North Warren Emergency Squad.
New Fire Truck for Chestertown!

In August of 2008 the Chestertown Fire Department placed in service a 2008 CET brush truck built on a 2008 Ford F-550. The new brush truck has a Warn Winch that can be used off both the front and the rear of the vehicle. It has a 5 man crew cab, a CET 240gallon per minute pump mounted to the chassis with pre-connected forestry lines, two 1 ¾” pre-connected hand lines and one booster reel. The truck also contains numerous hand tools a Scotty foam unit allow foam discharge on all lines and a 300 gallon poly tank. The truck also contains a portable 3800 watt Generator and Havis-Shields lights.
This truck replaces a 1984 GMC four wheel drive unit that was donated to Town of Chester for use with the Highway Department and the Parks and Recreation Department.

Microburst on Schroon River Road
August 14th, 2008
On July 24, 2008 at 6:54 PM the Chestertown Fire Department responded to a call for a report of trees down and power lines. Upon arrival of units multiple trees were found on a vehicle, into a house, and around a small area on Schroon River Road. Under the direction of 1st Asst Chief Crossman members stood by and assisted with the homeowner securing the property and stood by until the arrival of National Grid.
HAZMAT Spill
August 14th, 2008On August 4, 2008 at 1:11 PM the Chestertown Fire Department was dispatched to the Town of Chester Municipal Center for a reported hazardous materials spill inside of a truck in the parking lot. Upon arrival units found a 53′ box truck containing 5 gallon pails of Phosphoric Acid that had fallen off of a pallet prior to arrival for the Town of Chester Water Department. When the pails fell off of the pallet 5 pails were punctured leaking Aqua-Pure Z-3 in the truck and onto the parking lot. Mutual aid was requested by 2nd Asst. Chief Bartlett, the incident commander, from the Warren County Hazardous Materials Team. Members of the Chestertown Fire Department were able to contain the spill in the parking lot by using hazardous material absorbent socks and absorbent. Upon arrival of the Hazardous Materials Team, lead by the Glens Falls Fire Department under the direction of Chief Raymond Ives and Lieutenant Charles Mellon Jr. the situation was mitigated in 4 hours. In all 5 pails were damaged and approximately 10 gallons was spilled. The truck driver was taken to Glens Falls Hospital by the North Warren Emergency Squad for exposure. Mutual aid was received from the Horicon, Bolton, and Bay Ridge Fire Departments and the North Warren Emergency Squad.
