HAZMAT Spill
On August 4, 2008 at 1:11 PM the Chestertown Fire Department was dispatched to the Town of Chester Municipal Center for a reported hazardous materials spill inside of a truck in the parking lot. Upon arrival units found a 53′ box truck containing 5 gallon pails of Phosphoric Acid that had fallen off of a pallet prior to arrival for the Town of Chester Water Department. When the pails fell off of the pallet 5 pails were punctured leaking Aqua-Pure Z-3 in the truck and onto the parking lot. Mutual aid was requested by 2nd Asst. Chief Bartlett, the incident commander, from the Warren County Hazardous Materials Team. Members of the Chestertown Fire Department were able to contain the spill in the parking lot by using hazardous material absorbent socks and absorbent. Upon arrival of the Hazardous Materials Team, lead by the Glens Falls Fire Department under the direction of Chief Raymond Ives and Lieutenant Charles Mellon Jr. the situation was mitigated in 4 hours. In all 5 pails were damaged and approximately 10 gallons was spilled. The truck driver was taken to Glens Falls Hospital by the North Warren Emergency Squad for exposure. Mutual aid was received from the Horicon, Bolton, and Bay Ridge Fire Departments and the North Warren Emergency Squad.
